Using Custom Fields

Create and use custom contact properties beyond the default fields.

Using Custom Fields

Custom fields let you store additional data about your contacts beyond the built-in fields (email, first name, last name). Use them to store anything relevant to your business: company name, phone number, plan tier, purchase date, and more.

Creating a Custom Field

  1. Open Organization from the user menu and go to the Contact custom fields section.
  2. Under Add field, enter a Label (e.g., “Company”) and a Key (e.g., company). The key is used in personalization tags and the API.
  3. Click Add field.

Only owners and admins can manage custom fields. Custom field values are stored as text. Fields can also be created on the fly: mapping a CSV column to + New custom field during import creates one.

Using Custom Fields in Emails

Insert a custom field in your email with the personalization tag {{person.custom.your_key}} (replace your_key with the field’s key, for example {{person.custom.company}}). The first and last name tags are {{first_name}} and {{last_name}}.

Using Custom Fields in Segments

Custom fields can be used as filters in the segment builder, for example to target contacts whose plan_tier is “Enterprise.”

Editing and Deleting Fields

Click Edit next to a field to change its label. The key cannot be changed after the field is created, so existing personalization tags keep working. Click Delete to remove the field definition from your list of custom fields.

Tip: Plan your custom fields before importing contacts so you can map CSV columns directly to the right fields during import.
