Adding and Managing Tags
Use tags to categorize and organize your contacts.
Adding and Managing Tags
Tags are flexible labels you can attach to contacts for categorization and targeting. Unlike lists, tags are lightweight and can represent any attribute: interest area, lead source, purchase behavior, event attendance, and more. Tag names are stored in lowercase.
Adding Tags to Contacts
You can add tags in several ways:
- Single contact — Add tags in the Tags field when you create a contact, or open a contact, click Edit, and enter tags separated by commas. New tags are created automatically.
- CSV import — Apply tags to all imported contacts in the Options step, or map a column to Tags (comma-separated).
- Bulk action — Select contacts on the Contacts page, click Bulk Edit, and choose Add a tag.
- Automations — Use the Add tag or Remove tag actions in automation workflows.
Viewing Tags
Tags appear on each contact’s detail page. You can also filter the Contacts list by tag using the filter bar.
Using Tags in Segments
The segment builder includes Has tag and Not has tag rules, so you can match contacts who have (or do not have) specific tags.
Removing Tags
To remove a tag from a single contact, open the contact, click Edit, and delete the tag from the Tags field. To remove a tag from multiple contacts at once, select them, click Bulk Edit, and choose Remove a tag.
Managing Tags Across Your Organization
Open Organization from the user menu and go to the Tags section. It lists every tag with its number of contacts (click the number to see those contacts) and lets you Rename, Merge, or Delete a tag.
Tip: Establish a naming convention for tags early on (e.g.,source:webinar,interest:product-updates) to keep things organized as your list grows.
