Excluding Segments from a Campaign
Segment exclusions let you remove groups of contacts from a campaign's recipient list, even if those contacts belong to your selected target audience. Exclusions are applied at send time and take priority over target audience inclusion.
When to Use Exclusions
- Recently emailed — exclude contacts who received a campaign within the last 48 hours to avoid over-mailing.
- Already converted — exclude contacts who already purchased or signed up for the offer you are promoting.
- Specific customer tiers — exclude VIP customers from a general discount offer.
- Test holdouts — exclude a control group for measuring campaign lift.
How to Add Exclusion Segments
- In the campaign builder, go to the Audience step.
- Below the target audience selector, find the Exclude Segments section.
- Click Add Exclusion to open the segment selector.
- Choose one or more segments to exclude. Segments already selected as target audiences are grayed out and cannot be added as exclusions.
- The estimated recipient count updates to reflect the removals.
How Exclusions Are Applied
At send time, Mailnaptic follows this process:
- Build the full recipient list from all target lists and segments.
- De-duplicate by email address.
- Remove any contact who is a member of one or more exclusion segments at that moment.
- Apply frequency caps and global suppression.
- Queue the remaining contacts for delivery.
Important Notes
- Exclusions are evaluated at the moment of sending, not when you configure them. Segment membership may change between scheduling and sending.
- You can view the exclusion segments applied to any campaign on its detail page after sending.
- There is no limit to the number of exclusion segments you can add to a campaign.
Tips
- Build reusable exclusion segments (e.g., “Emailed in last 48 hours”) that you can apply consistently across campaigns.
- Check the recipient count before and after adding exclusions to understand the impact on your audience size.
- This feature requires the
campaign_exclusion_segmentdatabase table. If you do not see the exclusion section, ensure the migration has been run.
