CAN-SPAM Mailing Address
Why a mailing address is required and how to set it
CAN-SPAM Mailing Address Requirement
The CAN-SPAM Act (and similar laws in other jurisdictions) requires that every commercial email include a valid physical mailing address for the sender. Mailnaptic enforces this requirement to protect both you and your recipients.
Why Is a Mailing Address Required?
Under the CAN-SPAM Act (United States), CASL (Canada), GDPR (European Union), and other email marketing regulations, commercial emails must contain a physical postal address where the sender can be reached. This gives recipients a way to identify who is emailing them and provides regulatory authorities with accountability.
Failure to include a mailing address can result in:
- Fines and legal penalties.
- Increased spam complaints from recipients.
- Reduced deliverability as email providers flag non-compliant senders.
How Mailnaptic Enforces This
When you attempt to send or schedule a campaign, Mailnaptic checks whether the sending domain has a mailing address configured. If the mailing address is empty:
- The Send button on the campaign builder is disabled.
- An amber warning banner explains that a mailing address is required.
- You can still build, design, and preview the campaign — only the final send action is blocked.
Setting Your Mailing Address
- Navigate to Domains from the sidebar.
- Click on the domain you use for sending campaigns.
- In the domain settings, find the Mailing Address field.
- Enter your full physical mailing address. This can be:
- Your business street address.
- A PO Box.
- A registered agent's address.
- A commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA) address, provided you have registered with them.
- Save the domain settings.
Once saved, the mailing address is automatically included in the footer of all emails sent from that domain using the {{mailing_address}} merge tag.
Tips
- If you work from home and prefer not to share your home address, consider using a PO Box or virtual mailbox service.
- The mailing address is set per domain. If you send from multiple domains, configure the address on each one.
- Keep your mailing address up to date. If you move or change your registered address, update it in your domain settings promptly.
- The
{{mailing_address}}merge tag is automatically included in the default email footer. If you use a custom footer, ensure you include this tag manually.
