Manually Enrolling Contacts
Push contacts into an automation manually
Manually Enrolling Contacts
While automations typically enroll contacts through triggers, there are times when you need to push a contact (or a group of contacts) into an automation manually. Mailnaptic supports manual enrollment so you can use automations for one-off situations without modifying your trigger configuration.
When to use manual enrollment
- Testing: Enroll yourself or a test contact to verify the automation works correctly before activating triggers.
- One-time enrollment: A sales rep wants to enroll a specific lead into a nurture sequence.
- Bulk re-enrollment: You want to run an existing automation for a batch of contacts who missed the original trigger.
- Migration: Moving contacts from an old system and wanting to run them through your onboarding automation.
Enrolling a single contact
- Navigate to Automations in the sidebar.
- Open the automation you want to enroll the contact in.
- Look for the Enroll Contact option in the automation detail page.
- Search for and select the contact by email address or name.
- Confirm the enrollment.
The contact will enter the automation at the first step (after the trigger) and proceed through the workflow just like any automatically enrolled contact.
Enrolling multiple contacts
To enroll a batch of contacts:
- Create a segment or use an existing one that contains the contacts you want to enroll.
- Open the automation and use the bulk enroll feature.
- Select the segment or list.
- Confirm the bulk enrollment.
Bulk enrollment processes contacts in batches to avoid overwhelming the automation worker.
Re-entry rules
Manual enrollment respects the automation's re-entry configuration:
- If the automation is set to run once per contact, contacts who have already completed (or are currently in) the automation will not be enrolled again.
- If the automation allows re-entry, the contact will start a new run from the beginning.
Check the automation's trigger settings to understand its re-entry behavior before manually enrolling contacts.
Monitoring manual enrollments
Manually enrolled contacts appear in the automation's run list just like trigger-enrolled contacts. You can track their progress through each step and see whether emails were sent, conditions evaluated, and actions executed.
Best practices
- Always test automations by manually enrolling a test contact before activating triggers.
- Use manual enrollment sparingly in production — automations are most effective when driven by triggers.
- Verify the automation is active before enrolling contacts. If the automation is paused, enrolled contacts will not progress.
- Check re-entry settings to avoid accidentally enrolling contacts who have already been through the automation.
Manual enrollment gives you flexibility to use automations beyond their configured triggers, making them a versatile tool for both automated and manual workflows.
