Duplicating an Automation
Duplicating an automation creates an exact copy of an existing workflow, including all steps, conditions, delays, and email content. This is useful when you want to create a variation of an existing automation without building it from scratch.
How to duplicate an automation
- Navigate to Automations in the sidebar.
- Find the automation you want to duplicate in the list.
- Click the actions menu (three dots or similar) on the automation row.
- Select Duplicate.
- A copy of the automation is created with the name "Copy of [original name]."
- The duplicated automation is created in an inactive state, so it will not start running immediately.
What gets duplicated
The duplicate includes:
- All nodes and their configuration (triggers, email sends, delays, conditions, tag actions).
- The visual layout of nodes on the canvas.
- All edges (connections) between nodes.
- Email content within send email steps.
- Trigger configuration and filter conditions.
What does not get duplicated
- Active status: The duplicate is always created as inactive.
- Run history: The duplicate starts with no contacts enrolled and no run history.
- Statistics: All performance metrics start at zero.
- Version history: The duplicate starts with a clean version history.
Use cases for duplication
A/B testing automation flows
Duplicate an automation and modify one variable (e.g., delay timing, email content, or branching logic) to test which version performs better. Run both versions simultaneously with different audience segments.
Segment-specific variations
Create tailored versions of the same automation for different audience segments. For example, duplicate your welcome series and customize the content for different product lines or customer types.
Seasonal adaptations
Duplicate your core automations and adjust them for seasonal campaigns. Keep the original as a baseline and modify the copy with seasonal content, offers, and timing.
Iterative improvement
Before making major changes to a working automation, duplicate it as a backup. Make your changes to the duplicate, test it, and then deactivate the original and activate the new version.
After duplicating
- Rename the automation to something descriptive.
- Review and update the trigger configuration — you may want a different trigger for the duplicate.
- Update email content as needed.
- Test by manually enrolling a test contact.
- Activate when ready.
Best practices
- Always rename duplicated automations immediately to avoid confusion.
- Review the trigger configuration carefully — running two automations with the same trigger can lead to contacts receiving duplicate emails.
- Use duplication as a safe way to iterate on successful automations.
