Double Opt-In Setup

Configure double opt-in confirmation emails

Double Opt-In Setup

Double opt-in (also called confirmed opt-in) requires new contacts to verify their email address by clicking a confirmation link before they're added to your active mailing list. This extra step ensures that the person who signed up actually owns the email address and genuinely wants to receive your emails.

Why Use Double Opt-In

Double opt-in offers significant advantages:

  • Higher list quality: Every confirmed contact has a verified, working email address. This dramatically reduces bounces and invalid addresses.
  • Better engagement: Contacts who complete the confirmation step are more engaged on average, leading to higher open and click rates.
  • Compliance: Double opt-in satisfies the strictest consent requirements under GDPR and CASL. It provides clear proof that the contact requested to receive emails.
  • Spam trap protection: Bots and malicious actors who submit fake signups are filtered out because they never complete the confirmation step.

Enabling Double Opt-In

  1. Navigate to Organization → Preference Center.
  2. Under the Opt-In Settings section, toggle Require double opt-in to enabled.
  3. This applies to all new contacts created through signup forms, the API (when send_opt_in: true is passed), and CSV imports where the opt-in flag is set.

When enabled, new contacts are created with a status of pending. They receive a confirmation email immediately and are upgraded to active only after clicking the confirmation link.

Customizing the Confirmation Email

Mailnaptic sends a system-generated confirmation email that you can customize:

  • Subject line: Default is "Please confirm your subscription" — change it to match your brand voice.
  • Body text: Edit the message that appears above and below the confirmation button. Keep it concise and friendly.
  • Button text: Customize the call-to-action button label (e.g., "Yes, subscribe me!" or "Confirm my email").
  • Redirect URL: Specify where contacts land after clicking the confirmation link. Use this to show a thank-you page on your website.

Handling Unconfirmed Contacts

Contacts who don't confirm within a reasonable period remain in pending status. They are automatically excluded from all campaign sends. You can view pending contacts by filtering your contact list by status.

Mailnaptic does not automatically resend confirmation emails, but you can manually trigger a resend from the contact's detail page. Consider setting up a segment for contacts with pending status older than 7 days to monitor drop-off.

Double Opt-In Recency

For organizations with strict compliance requirements, Mailnaptic supports double opt-in recency — requiring contacts to re-confirm after a configurable period of inactivity. Configure this under Organization → Compliance Settings by setting the double_optin_recency_days value.
