Checking Your Spam Score

Analyze your email for spam triggers

Checking Your Spam Score

The spam score checker analyzes your email content for common spam triggers and gives you a score indicating how likely your email is to be flagged by spam filters. Running this check before sending helps improve deliverability and inbox placement.

How to Check Your Spam Score

  1. In the campaign builder, navigate to the Review step (step 3).
  2. The spam score analysis runs automatically when you reach the review step, or you can click Check Spam Score to run it manually.
  3. The checker analyzes your email content and returns:
    • Spam score (0-100) — a higher score means your email is less likely to be flagged as spam. Aim for 80 or above.
    • Issues found — a list of specific problems detected in your email, each with a severity level and a suggestion for fixing it.

What the Checker Looks For

The spam score checker analyzes multiple aspects of your email:

  • Content triggers — excessive use of spam-associated words and phrases (e.g., “FREE!!!”, “Act now”, “Limited time offer”).
  • Formatting issues — all-caps text, excessive exclamation marks, red text, or large font sizes that spam filters commonly flag.
  • Image-to-text ratio — emails that are mostly images with little text are flagged by many spam filters.
  • Link quality — too many links, shortened URLs, or links to suspicious domains can trigger filters.
  • Missing elements — absence of an unsubscribe link, missing mailing address, or no plain-text version.
  • HTML quality — broken HTML, excessive inline styles, or non-standard code that spam filters scrutinize.

Understanding Issue Severity

SeverityMeaning
CriticalLikely to cause spam filtering. Fix these before sending.
WarningMay negatively affect deliverability. Recommended to fix.
InfoMinor issue or suggestion for best practices. Optional to fix.

Improving Your Spam Score

  • Remove spam trigger words. Rephrase sentences that use aggressive sales language.
  • Balance images and text. Ensure your email has a healthy mix of text content alongside any images.
  • Use proper formatting. Avoid all-caps, excessive punctuation (!!!), and large colored text.
  • Include required elements. Make sure your email has an unsubscribe link and mailing address.
  • Clean your HTML. Use the email editor's built-in tools rather than pasting from external sources, which can introduce messy code.

Tips

  • Check your spam score after every major content change, not just once at the end.
  • A perfect score of 100 is not always necessary. Aim for 80+ and ensure there are no critical issues.
  • The spam score checker analyzes content only. It does not check your domain reputation or authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC). Use the deliverability dashboard for those checks.
  • Combine the spam score check with a test email send to see real-world inbox placement on major providers like Gmail and Outlook.
  • Even with a high spam score, maintain good list hygiene and sending practices for the best overall deliverability.
